All you have to do after reading several encouraging articles, you finally decided to have a home-based job. You practiced and learned some new skills. And you were able to set up your home office. You have chosen the right computer to use with the proper specs and you also bought a backup computer. You were able to get the right internet provider and the backup internet that you will use. You even have the wall painted with your favorite color and installed air conditioning. So what do you think is missing in the picture? If you are thinking a power backup. Then you are right. But in my experience, only a few have the concept of what a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is. So let me give you an idea.
A UPS is simply a backup power supply, but the difference is you get no interruption in times of power failure. In other words, your devices will not experience any downtime in case there is a power outage. So if you have your computer, router and modem plugged in the UPS then the moment the lights go out and you hear the neighbors shouting "brownout!" ( it means blackout in the Philippines ). Then you will still be up and running.
Most UPS will give you 10 to 15 minutes of extra time. Enough to save your work and for you to shut down your computer properly. Also, so that you can inform your team about your situation.
But a UPS can be really useful during power surges and fluctuations sometimes accompanied by a few seconds of a power outage, which happens often times in the Philippines, especially in the rainy seasons. So instead of your computer shutting down. And you, having to restart your computer, pulling up all the necessary tools and documents over again. A UPS will save you from the tedious task. And it is not advisable for computers to be abruptly shut down. Most of the time you will end up with a corrupted file and worse, a damaged computer. Most UPS are incorporated with AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) that provides stable voltage to keep equipment safe and running at optimal range. And if you also have your router and modem plugged into the UPS then your internet will stay up in times of power outages. UPS varies in capacity depending on the size of the battery. Some may even last for days. UPS are usually sold in computer stores and online stores.
Some of the things you must know before buying a UPS:
- Load, measured in watts, these are the devices that you will plug in your UPS like your computer, router, and modem. This is represented in watts. A laptop will consume 60-250 watts, a modem usually consumes 20 watts, also the router.
- Output Power Capacity, this is measured in watts or volt-ampere (VA), this will determine if the UPS can handle the load. If the load is a 250 watts computer, then it should not exceed the Output Power Capacity of the UPS it should be more than 250 watts.
- Nominal Output Voltage, this is measured in volts (V). This is the voltage that the load will receive. Like the computer and other devices that are plugged into the UPS. Usually 230V in the Philippines.
- Input voltage range for main operations, this is the voltage from your wall. In the Philippines it is 220V.
- Battery capacity, this is measured in watts of VA (volt-ampere) most of the time represented by the Output Power Capacity. So the bigger the VA(volt-ampere) the larger the capacity and the longer that your UPS will last.
You should also check the UPS dimensions if it will fit the space that your have. You can also check other specs like input frequency, input connections and cord length among others.
