A lot of us who are looking for an online job thinks how we should prepare, how it works, what should we say, or how should we respond. In this industry, a job interview is quite different. You will have your one on one interview through video call, audio call and via message through Skype. You will do answer a lot of tests, like grammar, comprehension, speed, and typing test.
In the interview, it is our opportunity to show the employer that we are qualified and we can fit with their culture. It is like an audition for the job, you impress them and offer them that you have the skills that they needed. So, in this blog, I will discuss with you what to do and what to avoid when applying for an online job.
The Do’s
Check the Company's Website
We don’t want to get scam right? So, the first thing you need to do when applying for a home based position is to visit and read the company’s website, their social media accounts, and even their review section. This is to make sure that you are applying for a legit online job and it’s a place you actually want to work.
Wear something decent
Online jobs require Skype interview or Video Recording, meaning it is a once in a lifetime exposure to the employers. Even if you are just sitting down there, wear a nice dress, or pants and shoes because you will never know if you are going to stand up. You should wear decently, not totally formal but make an effort on how you will present yourself to them.
Arrive 10-15mins early
When the interview starts at 8:00 in the morning be sure that by 7:45AM to 7:50AM, you are already prepared. Don’t let them wait for you, remember that you need a job and you need to give them a first impression. A late arrival for a job interview is never excusable. If you are running late, call and let the employer know.
Provide all the information
Since you are applying for a home based position, expect that there are a lot of answering forms and requirements (like speed test, typing test, grammar test, and comprehension test). Provide and submit them at the right time so they will know that you are more than willing to be part of their home based team.
Review all the information you imported before submitting
Think before you click. It’s a good technique that you double check or re-read the information you will submit. Because once you submit it, sometimes you can’t change it all, or you might confuse the recruiter. So before submitting your information, review it.
If you don't understand, ask and clarify it to the administrator
There is no harm in asking. Ask everything you don’t understand. It is a good behavior if you understand what they are saying instead of saying “Okay, I understand” even though it’s not. Don’t be shy to ask, you have the right to know and understand what you will be doing and where will you be working in the future.
If not interested, cancel and inform the recruiter
Go and inform the recruiter if you don’t want to pursue your career in their company. Don’t just leave them not knowing you will never come back. They invest time in doing your interview, so as a return if you are not interested, inform them. They will appreciate more it if you let them know.
Answer fast, concise and straightforward
Every interview through Skype is recorded, make sure when the recruiter asks you questions, answer them fast and straightforward. Don’t think that your interviewer is the only one who can listen to it. The manager, the boss, and the team can actually hear what are your answers to their questions so don’t waste their time waiting for your nonsense feedback. They want the truth and concise explanation.
If you get hired, don't forget to send a thank you note
Recruiters invest their time and effort to assess whether you, the job seeker, is qualified to be part of their company or not. Thank them for reviewing your application, and for investing time to do your interview.
The Don'ts
Don't lie
It’s hard not to lie when you are in the interview. What if you get fired? How will you answer that, right? But always remember that companies do a background check, if you’ll lie about your experience you will definitely not be hired or employed.
Don't be soft spoken
Speak intelligently. Don’t be shy, take note that you are auditioning for a job. You need to show what you’ve got and why they should hire you. Speak clearly and confidently.
Don't discuss your family problem
Some candidates open their family problem to the employer so they will pity him/her. If you show them that you are really a performer and they can see the potential in you, you don’t need to open some personal information about your life.
Don’t act disinterested in the recruiter
There are lots of applicants who wants the position you are applying for, so, if you are really interested in pursuing your application, show it. But if you are letting them see that you just want a sideline or a part time job with them, they will surely end right away your interview. They don’t want to invest time in people who looks not interested.
Don’t eat or chew gum during the interview
Do you want to talk to an employer and do your interview while they are eating? Of course not! Who wants that? As the saying goes “do not do unto others, what you don’t want to do unto you”. Don’t eat or chew while you’re being interviewed, if you don’t want to see your recruiter chewing something.
